After divorce, one parent may seek to relocate from the state of Connecticut or a distance away within Connecticut with his or her child. If the relocation would impact the parties' parenting access plan, a relocating parent must seek the Court's permission to relocate with his or her child.

Relocating post-divorce is governed by Connecticut General Statute 46b-56d. In general, a relocating parent must prove by a preponderance of the evidence that (1) the relocation is for a legitimate purpose, (2) the proposed relocation is reasonable in light of that purpose, and (3) the proposed relocation is in the best interests of the child.

Relocation cases are often the most difficult and complex child-related matters post-judgment.
